ANSWER: Junipero Serra

This Franciscan priest’s expeditions in California resulted in the founding of missions that converted multitudes of natives to Christianity. Born on the Spanish island of Majorca in 1713 A.D., the missionary, linguist and doctor of theology translated the Catechism into the language of the Pame Indians in California. He died in Monterrey, California in 1784.
