12. THE QUESTION WAS: Do we have a moral
responsibility to avoid the “near occasions of sin”?
Answer:
Yes, we must avoid the near occasions of sin (which are the external circumstances
– whether of things or persons – which either because of their special nature
or because of the frailty common to humanity or peculiar to some individual,
incite or entice one to sin” (Catholic
Encyclopedia).
So, whether it be watching a certain movie or hanging
around a certain person, placing oneself in a circumstance known to lead you
into mortal sin would be a mortal sin.
The
Bible says, “He that loveth danger shall
perish in it.” (Ecclesiasticus 3:27)
